What class is your animal in?

Today I had a group of 5th grade students begin a mini research project. The end result will be a class book on Arctic Animals. As I was going over the directions on how to fill out the outline page, I made a point to make sure each student was paying attention (or so I thought). They needed to list the Class and Family of their animal. I showed them my example and where to find that information for their own animals.

Here is my example:
Animal - Arctic Char
Class - Boney Fishes
Family - Salmon

Here is what one student turned in:
Animal - Arctic Puffin
Class - Miss Barkers
Family - Bird

I busted out laughing when I read this! When I questioned the student about his answers, he thought he had completed the outline correctly. I asked him if he was listening to me when I gave the directions. The student said he must have missed that part about "Classes". Ya think???
